INTRODUCTION
Resolution No. 4 of Fourth
United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names
recommends that countries should be encouraged to publish and keep up-to-date
toponymic guidelines for map and other editors which may enable cartographers
of other countries to treat correctly all problems of cartotographic toponymy
of the countries that produced such guidelines, and which may be of help
to all users in interpreting maps.
The first guidelines for the
Slovak Republic were elaborated and published as part of Czecho-Slovak
toponymic guidelines in 1987. The first Slovak edition was accomplished
in 1993, the second one in 1996.
The third edition of toponymic
guidelines takes into account legislative changes introduced after 1996.
They were worked out according to the recommendation No. 4 of the Fourth
Conference, No. 14 of the Fifth Conference and No. 7 of the Sixth Conference
of the United Nations on the Standardization of Geographical Names and
contains parallell Slovak and English versions.
